Lin frowned and looked to the side, away from the young Avatar. “Love is hard, especially when you’re young,” Lin began, “I loved Tenzin very, very much. And when we first announced our engagement our parents were very pleased.” Lin smiled at the memory. The way Katara had burst in to tears and clutched at her new daughter-in-law, how her father had shaken Avatar Aang’s hand. Even her normally stoic mother cracked a smile at the news.
The memories faded, and were replaced by reality. “But, after a few months it became difficult. Tenzin took his place on the Council and I rose in the ranks. Our new duties weighed heavily on us. Tenzin expected me to retire, settle down. But I had other plans. My own aspirations. We,” Lin paused, her throat constricting at the words, “We weren’t happy anymore.”
“We drifted apart, slowly at first. I focused more on my work and Tezin…well Tenzin found Pema.” Lin gulped. “It’s still hard…seeing him so often. But he’s happy, and in a way, that makes me happy too.”
Lin looked at Korra, making sure her body movements belied the importance of her words. “Korra, sometimes, when you truly, truly love someone…you have to let them find their own happiness. You have to let him go.”
